Andrew Swanson is the USM Cybersecurity Director. He grew up as a Catholic boy in
the mountains of Colorado. He has deep Kansas roots since his Irish great grandparents
were married in Kansas City in 1872. Andrew has lived here in Leavenworth County since
2007. He has been teaching as an adjunct faculty member with USM since 2021 and has
been a member of the Bethany prison ministry on Fort Leavenworth since 2019. Included
in his background with cybersecurity is 40 years’ experience in national security
with the Department of Defense as a Signals Intelligence Technician and adjunct faculty
member of the National Cryptologic School. He has a liberal education with a Master
of Arts Degree, 1999, and a Master of Science in Computer Science Object Oriented
Technology, cum laude, 2005. He works best as an analyst, but he began teaching English
in secondary schools in 1975, went on to teach work skills to challenged adults at
a sheltered workshop until entering the U.S. Army in 1981. After leaving active duty
in 1997, Andrew taught 7th Grade and the Computer Lab at Saint Therese School in Aurora,
CO. Positions he was employed for work on security and systems include Systems Analyst,
Systems Administrator, Test Engineer, Integration Engineer, and System Test Manager.
