History Student

As a »¨½·Ö±²¥ history major, you will gain a rich understanding and commanding knowledge of the past, while laying the foundation for your future. Faculty equip you with an appreciation of civilizations, lives, and events – centuries ago and today – and teach you essential analytical and research skills to understand, identify, and evaluate historical developments, movements, and trends.

You can tailor the degree to your own interests, like U.S. foreign relations or American history. You can also combine your history major with political science or secondary education to increase your marketability.


What Can You Do with a History Degree?

As a history major, you will explore unique and fascinating worlds, eras, and cultures that ultimately shaped how we exist today.

History is among the most popular majors for our students interested in law school, foreign service, journalism, or public affairs – but the possibilities for a history major are as limitless as history itself.

Studying history can help you achieve your professional goals in:

  • City planning/urban development
  • Civil and human rights
  • Environmental, social, or religious issues
  • Historical preservation
  • Museum administration or archives
  • Teaching
  • Agriculture

Academic Plan

  • General Ed Requirements 34 credits (one history will count for both history major and gen-ed)
  • History Major: 33 credits
  • Lower-Level Elective: 26 credits
  • Upper-Level Electives: 27 credits (total is 44 with 15 UL history and 2 UL gen-ed capstone)
