Current Honors Students
Now that you are an honors student, what do you need to know about honors courses?
Grounded in the mission of the 花椒直播 and the core values of community, respect, justice, and excellence, the course introduces students to diverse global perspectives and worldviews. Students will learn about cultural differences, identify ethical dimensions of decisions, examine ways to listen, see, and communicate through others鈥 perspectives, and demonstrate awareness of challenges facing our global society. Must be enrolled in the University Honors Program. (2 credit hours)
Honors students enroll in HN 150 each semester they are in the Honors Program. This course is pass/fail and provides a central online location for students to have online discussions, group emails, keep track of upcoming honors events, and record events attended. Every student in the program should be enrolled in this course. (0 credit hours)
Various faculty lead interdisciplinary seminars on a particular theme, introducing students to contemporary and historical issues. Past Honors Seminar topics include Global Poverty, Terrorism, Gender Issues, Artistic Expression, and Social Change. Forms of assessment vary, but this course is run seminar鈥恠tyle and students are expected to actively participate and sometimes lead discussion, develop their own ideas and projects on the seminar topic. This course is not offered every semester (1 credit hours)
The Advanced Honors Seminar is a more detailed and rigorous engagement between students and faculty in conversation focusing on a given theme. Each student is expected to develop their own research project and synthesize various class materials and outside research in developing their own research agenda and presentation. All honors students are required to take at least one HN350 during their time in the program. (3 credit hours)
Honors FAQ
Honors鈥恑n鈥怌ourse/Honors鈥恑n鈥怓ield projects offer eligible students, by invitation of an instructor or mentor, the opportunity for in鈥恉epth investigation of a subject or development of a special program or service. Presentation before an audience concludes the project.
Honors鈥恑n鈥怌ourse Projects students should work with their course instructor to develop a project extending a course topic (a project from a course in which the student is currently enrolled and is interested in) that furthers the student鈥檚 knowledge in the course subject area. The project should be sufficiently challenging and not a normal part of the course. Successful completion requires an 鈥淎鈥 on the project and at least a 鈥淏鈥 in the course. Students should initiate the project, work with their instructor, and submit project proposal paperwork, including appropriate signatures, to the honors coordinator by the fall deadline in October or spring deadline in February. Instructors will be responsible for working with the student and submitting project completion paperwork.
Honors鈥恑n鈥怓ield Projects students should work with a mentor or advisor to develop a project extending their knowledge of their major field. The project should be sufficiently challenging. The project should not be part of an existing course or substitution. Successful completion requires an 鈥淎鈥 on the project. Students should initiate the project, work with their advisor/mentor, and submit project proposal paperwork, including appropriate signatures, to the honors coordinator by the fall deadline (October) or spring deadline (February). The advisor/mentor will be responsible for working with the student and submitting project completion paperwork.
Students will present all projects at the Honors Colloquium in either December (last week of the semester) or May (last week of the semester) in the KLC to members of faculty and other honors students.
Departmental Honors requires completion of two Honors鈥恑n鈥怌ourse or Honors鈥恑n鈥怓ield projects in student鈥檚 major, a 3.50 GPA in major courses, and recommendation by the departmental faculty for the honor. All University Honors Requires achievement of Departmental Honors; participation in the 花椒直播 Honors Program, including attendance of various activities and events (HN 150) and participation in one 3鈥恈redit Honors Seminar (HN 350); a 3.70 cumulative GPA; and recommendation of the Honors Committee. Should it not be possible for the student to take the requisite Honors Seminar, then an appeal for exemption from the Honors Seminar may be made through the academic dean. In such instances, participation in an Honors鈥恑n鈥怌ourse or Honors鈥恑n鈥怓ield outside of the major may be deemed a suitable substitute for course credits in the Honors Seminars.
Students who are double majors will fall into two categories: (a) those who have achieved Departmental Honors in one of their majors, and (b) those who have achieved Departmental Honors in both of their majors. In order to achieve All鈥怳niversity Honors, students falling into both categories are expected to participate in an Honors Seminar. As above, should it not be possible for the student to take the Honors Seminar, then an appeal for exemption may be made through the academic dean. For students in category (a), participation in an additional Honors鈥恑n鈥怌ourse or Honors鈥恑n鈥怓ield outside of one of the majors may be deemed a suitable substitute for participation in the Honors Seminar. For students in category (b), the academic dean will advise as to whether a third Honors鈥恑n鈥怓ield or Honors鈥恑n鈥怌ourse is required or whether an exemption may be granted.
Honors Club: The Honors Club at USM is a student run, social organization that hosts events for students in the All鈥怳niversity Honors Program and students interested in Honors Program events and activities. Throughout each semester, the Honors Club hosts a variety of activities designed to help students to decompress and socialize.
The Honors Leadership Council provides the student leadership for the Honors Club. The HLC is a group of elected students who agree to organize, lead, support, and attend Honors Club events. The Honors Program Coordinator serves as the club鈥檚 faculty advisor.
