Highlights:

I am the Honors Coordinator and currently an Assistant Professor of English at the 花椒直播. I am a lifelong learner and teacher. I was born and educated in Northwest Missouri and completed both my bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degrees at Northwest Missouri State University.

I try to create as many opportunities as possible for students to collaborate, question, discuss, and investigate. I value gaining the respect of my students and look forward to continuing the pursuit of natural curiosity and inquisitiveness as the Honors Coordinator at the 花椒直播.

Kyle Anthony, Ph.D.Kyle Anthony, Ph.D.

Professor
Kyle.Anthony@stmary.edu
913-758-6157
Xavier 201

Highlights:

I have been at USM since 2013, primarily teaching courses in United States history and military history. I served on the Honors Committee from 2014 to 2016, and have taught two honors seminars at USM. The first was a co-taught course on the history and philosophy of American presidential elections (which was taught in the Fall 2016 semester during that election season). A second seminar was offered the following year, titled 鈥淎merican Horror Stories,鈥 which was an in-depth look at eight horror films from the 1950s to the present and how these horror films reflected the anxiety, paranoia, and fears of Americans within the appropriate historical context of each film.

Beyond my service within the Honors program, I have mentored several honors students within the history program as they worked to earn either all-university honors or departmental honors.  Most recently, honors students in the history program have completed such projects as a history of mall culture (with a focus on the Great Mall of Olathe), on the history of lacrosse and its meaning within indigenous cultures, and survey of Vietnam-era films and how they portrayed veterans within popular culture.

My favorite thing about the honors program is how it creates an incredible culture of excellence and allows students the opportunity to explore areas of personal interest with in-depth studies.

Highlights:

I am an assistant professor in the Exercise Science and Athletic Training Department at USM. I have spent most of my athletic training career as a clinical athletic trainer at The University of Kansas Hospital and Saint Luke's Health System.

I received a basketball scholarship and played two years while earning my Bachelor's of Science in Athletic Training at Southwest Baptist University. After graduation, I spread my wings and moved to Tyler, Texas, graduating with my Master's of Science in Kinesiology. In 2020, I completed the Doctor of Athletic Training at A.T. Still University.

I have served on the Honors Committee at USM. I have a passion for serving honors students because I was a member of the National Honors Society as a student. I am an advisor and mentor to a plethora of students.

My favorite part about honors is the involvement students have around campus and the events they hold throughout the year.

Highlights:

I have served at the 花椒直播 since 2012 as a teacher, program director, and former honors coordinator.  I teach courses in global management, international political economy, law and ethics, organizational behavior, managerial economics, and leadership.  I have also taught courses in American government, international relations, political theory, ideologies, and political strategy.  I have taught the honors section of 花椒直播 Experience, and I teach an HN350 honors seminar course called 鈥淭he Business and Politics of Rock and Roll.鈥

I am the author of Celebrity Influence: Politics, Persuasion, and Issue-Based Advocacy, and a co-author of The Hollywood Connection: The Influence of Fictional Media and Celebrity Politics on American Public Opinion and Simulations in the Classroom: Games Without Frontiers.  I have also published articles on celebrity and media coverage in elections, the business and politics of the music, sports, and other entertainment industries, human rights, economic development, democratization, and learning teams in the online classroom.

Before joining the 花椒直播 team, I taught at several universities in the US and the UK.  Before that, I was a small business owner and professional consultant, a gifted education teacher for Duke University鈥檚 Talent Identification Program, and a youth minister. I鈥檓 also a singer/songwriter, having played professionally in several bands.  If you want to hear some of my music, check out my  page on YouTube.

I was an honors student in high school and college.  My favorite part of the USM Honors program is the strong community we have built among our top scholars.  For many, this is their favorite organization on campus.  It鈥檚 a place where people are respected for their gifts and diverse backgrounds, and can feel comfortable and safe putting their intelligence on display, taking academic risks, and developing their leadership skills.

I am always open to advising honors students on projects in business or political science.  Contact me at mark.harvey@stmary.edu or follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn: @DrMAHarvey.

Laveda Peterlin, Ph.D.Laveda Peterlin, Ph.D.

Communications Program Director, Associate Professor of Communications
Laveda.Peterlin@stmary.edu
913-758-6277
花椒直播 Hall 406

Highlights:

I direct the communications program at USM.  I have published several academic articles and presented at many conferences. I received a visiting professor鈥檚 grant in social media from AEJMC in 2018.

Born and raised in Chicago, I am a first-generation college student who attended Chicago public schools. Attending a community college, I earned my associate degree in liberal arts before I started bowling competitively, competing in regional professional tournaments at one point.

I returned to school to pursue my interest in radio broadcasting. I earned my bachelor鈥檚 degree at St. Xavier University, Chicago, in Mass Communications. I was working at WUSN (top 5 station at that time) in Chicago, then took a position at ESPN 1000, where I worked my way up to producer of White Sox baseball. This made me the first woman to produce baseball in Chicago.

Next, I worked in nationally syndicated radio as an executive producer and host. I left for a position at NAVTEQ, where I was the Chicago supervisor for traffic operations. I supervised 30 employees who gathered and disseminated traffic information to all the major radio and TV stations and provided information for GPS navigation.

In 2012, I started attending Lindenwood University to study Educational Technology for my master鈥檚 degree, then was a professor there for two years. I was accepted into the PhD program at the University of Kansas to study Journalism and Mass Communications, where I taught classes while attending and as an adjunct in the summers. My dissertation research centered on the use of television programming to teach students in higher education.

My four grown children, their three spouses, my two grandchildren, and my dogs keep me busy. I like to drink coffee, papercraft, make LEGO, and watch television.

I have served several years on the Honors Committee, completing two elected terms of two years each.  I teach an honors seminar called Digital Storytelling.  I have also advised students on honors projects.  One student completed a documentary on the inauguration of the SpireFire program. Another student made a set of videos for the Keleher Learning Commons. The most recent honors student designed a handbook for future students and assisted Xavier School with their social media program.

The honors program gives students who excel in academics a chance to be around like-minded students and engage in activities that may not otherwise be accessible. Students get a chance to explore classes that are taught with exceptional students in mind. They get a chance to explore areas of interest and research more fully a special topic they choose. Once they complete the program they get the distinction on graduation day and forever it is a part of their academic record, that sets them apart in the eyes of all who see their resume.

Associate Professor

Highlights:

Like my mom, I鈥檓 a USM alumna. My journey began at Bishop Ward High School in Kansas City, Kansas, where I graduated with honors. It continued at Wichita State University and culminated here as one of the commencement speakers. Along the way, I earned several honors and was a White House intern. I earned an Executive Master of Business Administration from Benedictine College while simultaneously serving on teams that shepherded and launched much of the technology we enjoy today such as, broadband communications, computer telephony, CRM applications, high speed internet, interactive voice response, and speech recognition while employed at Sprint Corporation.

I later earned the Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education Administration from Saint Louis University, where I developed a grounded theory for Fostering Greatness in people of all ages. The theory is intended to have limitless impact in producing excellent people of character and for ushering in a new paradigm of performance standards that redefine Greatness and revolutionize communities, the arts, music, business, government, economics, entertainment, interpersonal relationships and family dynamics.

I鈥檒l share the findings with the honors class this fall.

I am a member of several local and national professional organizations. I provided faculty development workshops for the Kansas City Professional Development Council (KCPDC) multiple years addressing several topics such as soft skills development and fostering Greatness and conducted workshops for Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and for the Publisher鈥檚 Marketing Association at their national conference several years. I now serve on the International Book Publishers Association (IBPA) Editorial Board of Directors and also mentor prospective entrepreneurs and small business owners in the Regnier Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

I have been utilized by several organizations for technical writing, operational consultation, business planning, and marketing strategies. As consultant, I developed the workforce development strategy for a local community college and provided goal-setting, time-management, and career development workshops for another. I published several business and professional articles in journals such as the Journal of International Business, Smart Retailer, and MBE Connect Business.

I joined the Business and Information Technology Department in the fall of 2021 as an Associate Professor of Business Management. I specialize in Management, Leadership, Strategic Planning, Marketing, Managerial Leadership, Global Business Strategies, Human Resource Management, Operational Efficiencies, and Business Ethics. I was recognized as Business Instructor of the Year by the Missouri and Kansas Associations of Professional Career Colleges and schools (MAPCCS/KAPCCS) and am a trained facilitator for the Kauffman Fasttrac Growth Ventures course.

My heart is to minister to and mentor women and young adults especially single parents, since I held that role parenting my now married 37-year-old son. As a licensed minister, I actively volunteer with and support several local organizations mentoring teens, the homeless, and domestic violence survivors. As an author and consultant, I continue to provide operational and planning guidance to start-up operations while simultaneously providing career, emotional, and spiritual support to men and women who hail from diverse backgrounds and abilities.
