Become a School Counselor

School counseling is a profession that integrates professional counseling and education in creating its own identity, standards, expectations, skill set, practice applications, and requirements. Licensed school counselors are uniquely trained and qualified as counseling practitioners and educators who work with all children and adolescents in elementary, middle, and high schools. They deliver a data-informed and results-focused comprehensive program with wide-ranging prevention, early identification, short-term counseling interventions and support. School counselors are leaders, advocates, collaborators, and facilitators of systemic change.

Blending counseling practitioner and educator, licensed school counselors bring to the table a unique understanding of students, the school as a complex system and culture, and address needs within the context of the whole student rather than separately in isolation. School counselor training involves a basic professional counseling core, and a school specialization in how to adapt therapeutic clinical knowledge and skills for students in the non-clinical, non-therapeutic school setting. They develop knowledge and skills needed to define, deliver, manage, and assess the results of a comprehensive counseling program that supports all students within the educational mission of schools. No other professional is trained to function in this expansive role.

School counselors are responsible for facilitating age-appropriate social-emotional, academic, and career development of all students in the school. Following state and/or district approved counseling curricula that anticipates the developmental needs of students, licensed school counselors proactively deliver instruction directly to all students as they teach counseling lessons that enhance each student’s knowledge, skills, character qualities, and resilience. They help all students self-assess, make decisions, set goals, create and feel empowered to implement action plans. School counselors deliver short-term individual and group counseling to help students in addressing and resolving immediate needs, issues, and concerns. They also deliver services indirectly by collaborating and consulting with parents, teachers, administrators, other school specialists and staff, and community resources.
