Medical Laboratory Sciences
Lay the Foundation for Your Future
Forecasts for careers in health care are off the charts, including the need for laboratory scientists. As a medical laboratory science major at USM, you鈥檒l master the skills to run diagnostic tests to provide data for key physicians and nurses.
When you major in medical laboratory science at USM, you choose your path, with two choices:
-
Three years of course work followed by an internship at North Kansas City Hospital or Truman Hospital
-
Traditional four-year program in biology followed by an internship anywhere in the country
The program prepares students for required academic internships with the School of Medical Laboratory Science at North Kansas City Hospital or Truman Hospital. The program is practical, also preparing students to ultimately pass national certifying examinations.
What Can You Do with a Medical Laboratory Degree?
Medical laboratory science is a high-demand career field. Graduates often have job offers with signing bonuses prior to completing their internships. Certified medical laboratory scientists enjoy outstanding job security and portability as their needs change.
Recent USM graduates have moved on to excel in variety of fields, working in hospital laboratories, physicians' offices, blood banks, and diagnostic labs.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the employment of medical laboratory technicians and scientists will increase by seven percent through 2031. In 2023, the national median pay was $64,000 per year.
