(Leavenworth, Kan.)—The »¨½·Ö±²¥ this fall will showcase an acclaimed National Library of Medicine Exhibit, "From DNA to Beer:  Harnessing Nature in Medicine and Industry," in De Paul Library on USM's Leavenworth campus, 4100 South 4th Street. The exhibit will be on display Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-9:30 p.m., Fridays from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and Sundays from 5:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. from Oct. 27 through Saturday, Nov. 25.

The opening lunch-and-learn for the event, sponsored by USM's Lawrence D. Starr Center for Peace & Justice (CPJ), will be from 11 a.m.-noon Friday, Oct. 27.  Dr. Sam Al-Murrani of Prommune Inc. will talk on "Advanced Biologics – Teaching the Body New Tricks."  USM's STEM Club will host a second lunch and learn featuring a talk by alum Cody Wente (U'11), brewer with KC Bier Company on Monday, Nov. 6 from 11 a.m.-noon. USM's Biology program will host a final lunch and learn with student reflections on Monday, Nov. 20 from 11 a.m.-noon.  These events are free, open to the public and held in the De Paul Library Active Learning Center.

"From DNA to Beer" explores some uses of microorganisms for health and commercial purposes.  The production of hormones, antibiotics and vaccines for human health are explored alongside the use of yeast in brewing.

This exhibit complements USM's fall courses, Microbiology and Immunology as well as the various health care programs of the university.

Dr. Caroline Mackintosh, chair of the department of natural sciences and mathematics, and biology program director, said, "Our students are learning about hormones, antibiotics and vaccines in their classes.  The exhibit will add even greater clarity to their learning—giving our students, faculty and staff, and the public an opportunity to better understand how dependent we are on microorganisms."
