USM Theology Lecture Set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28
(Leavenworth, Kan.)—The »¨½·Ö±²¥ department of theology & pastoral
ministry presents "Learning Jesus in the Life of the Church" with celebrated author,
noted biblical scholar, and renowned professor Dr. Luke Timothy Johnson, Candler School
of Theology's Robert W. Woodruff Professor Emeritus at Emory University, for USM's
annual Theology Lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, in Annunciation Chapel on the
university's Leavenworth campus, 4100 South 4th Street.
The lecture is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so early arrival is
recommended.
Dr. Johnson will unfold how to incorporate the spirituality and teaching of Jesus
into our lives, addressing a proper understanding of the Resurrection, modes and means
of learning the living Lord, and moral and intellectual qualities that make such learning
possible. Instead of studying Jesus as just a historical figure, Dr. Johnson's presentation
will reveal Him as a living presence.
Dr. Johnson is the author of 31 books, including "The Real Jesus"— the first book
to challenge the findings of the Jesus Seminar, a controversial group of 200 scholars
who claim Jesus only said 18 percent of what the Gospels attribute to him. He has
also authored more than 70 scholarly articles, 100 popular articles, and nearly 200
book reviews. Prior to being named Emory University's most distinguished endowed chair
in 1992, he taught at both Yale Divinity School and Indiana University.
A reception with Dr. Johnson will immediately follow the presentation in the Social
Room.
