(Leavenworth, Kan.)鈥擳he 花椒直播 will celebrate the first total solar
eclipse in 99 years to cross the entire continental U.S. with an All-American Eclipse
Celebration on Monday, Aug. 21 beginning at noon in the front circle on the USM main
campus in Leavenworth at 4100 South 4th Street. The event will include family-friendly
activities, music, and lunch鈥攁long with space to view the eclipse.
The event is open to the community. Tickets are $10 (includes lunch and eclipse-compliant
glasses) and can be purchased by visiting stmary.edu/EclipseRSVP. Lunch will be served
in Saint Joseph Dining Hall.
Leavenworth is in the eclipse's path of totality, with the eclipse's partial phase
beginning at approximately 11:40 a.m. Eclipse experts estimate the start of totality
in Leavenworth to begin at 1:07 p.m.鈥攁nd though the total phase in 2017 will last
a maximum of 2 minutes 40 seconds in the center of the moon's shadow, it will stretch
just 1 minute 31 seconds on USM's campus.
Any time during the partial phase of the eclipse, observers must wear eclipse-compliant
glasses (sunglasses are not eclipse-compliant) to block both the visible and invisible
sun's rays that can cause serious damage to an observer's sensitive eye tissue. During
the short phase of totality though, observers can remove eyewear.
The eclipse begins on a west-coast beach in Oregon (totality around 10:18 a.m. PDT)
and ends on a beach in South Carolina (totality estimated at 2:48 p.m. EDT)鈥攎aking
a narrow diagonal track across the United States through 14 states, including both
Kansas and Missouri.
The next total eclipse will hit North America in seven years (April 2024), but its
path crosses hundreds of miles from the upcoming trek and runs diagonal to it. The
2024 eclipse first touches Mexico, enters the U.S. at Texas, cuts a diagonal to Maine,
and visits the nautical provinces of Canada.
The American Astonomical Society states that the upcoming eclipse is much more than
a scientific bonanza鈥攑romoting it as an opportunity for ordinary people to experience
what is arguably nature's most awesome spectacle.
