(Leavenworth, Kansas) – Step back in time and explore Leavenworth, a small Kansas town with a unique history, as chronicled in a rare photographic collection taken by pioneer photographers.

The »¨½·Ö±²¥ has partnered with the Leavenworth County Historical Society and Museum to bring the collection to the Goppert Gallery on USM’s main campus at 4100 South 4th Street.

USM will host an opening reception from 1-6 p.m. on Feb. 26. The gallery will be open on weekdays from Feb. 26-28 and March 10-28, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

A few highlights include:

  • A panorama of western emigration
  • Views of unpaved streets crammed with businesses, the first railway depot, steamboats transporting settlers and supplies, the 1871 railroad bridge over the Missouri River, and later the electric streetcar
  • Images of ordinary residents and others who became well known for their contributions to history, including President Ulysses S. Grant, Douglas MacArthur as a youth, members of the Fred Harvey family, and ancestors of Walter Cronkite

»¨½·Ö±²¥ student Allie Cox helped bring the traveling exhibition to USM and installed it in the Goppert Gallery with Tom Wallestad, associate professor of art and graphic design. Cox volunteered with the Leavenworth County Historical Society and Museum for her senior seminar and honors project.
