OT StudentsThe »¨½·Ö±²¥â€™s Doctor of Occupational Therapy commits to a holistic review of applicants and broad admissions criteria to support selection of future occupational therapists aligned with the mission of the university and the profession. Drawing on a holistic admissions process, the program welcomes applicants with unique lived experiences, characteristics that align with a caring profession, a commitment to science and service, along with strong academic performance.

The OTD program considers each applicant’s potential contributions to the OTD program and the occupational therapy profession through a review of application material received through the  and participation in USM OTD Program Interview Day. While the process aims to consider the â€whole†of the applicant rather than keeping a narrow focus only on GPA, it remains a competitive selection process. As you create a profile in OTCAS, be sure to select the »¨½·Ö±²¥ (Kansas) as a recipient of your application.


Applicant Requirements

Occupational therapy programs leading to a doctorate degree require students to have completed a bachelor’s degree prior to admission. Complementary degree programs include but are not limited to natural sciences (biology, kinesiology), social sciences (psychology, sociology, arts, policy, cultural) and related courses of study such as family studies and disability studies. Although specific course prerequisites are not required, the OTD program encourages students seeking admission to the OTD program to engage in a well-rounded undergraduate learning experience as a foundation for success. Courses such as psychology, sociology or anthropology, human anatomy, and physiology are encouraged but not required as part of the application process or admission to the OTD program. No GRE is required.

  • Candidates will have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. A minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA (4.0 scale) supports consideration.
  • The USM OTD admission process is managed through the Occupational Therapy Centralized Application Service (OTCAS). Applicants will submit the following to OTCAS at . 
    • Official Transcripts from each higher education institution
    • References: A minimum of three professional references are required, including one academic reference. Letters of recommendation should reflect the applicant’s potential for success in a graduate program and commitment to occupational therapy.
    • Personal essay: The personal essay should address why you selected occupational therapy as a career and how this profession relates to your personal and professional goals. Also, you will include how the Vincentian values of community, respect, justice, and excellence align with your understanding of occupational therapy. This essay is an important part of your application and allows you to express yourself clearly and effectively.

Admissions Process

Interested applicants complete and submit required materials through the Occupational Therapy Centralized Application System (OTCAS).

The priority application deadline is Dec. 31, with classes beginning in the fall semester of the following year.

  • Applications received prior to Oct. 1 will be invited to participate in the Early Decision Interview Day in mid-October.
  • Applications received by the later priority deadline will be invited to participate in the USM OTD Interview Day in January.
  • All admissions decisions will be conveyed within 30 days of the interviews.

After receipt and review of a complete application, qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an on-site interview. The interview is the final phase of the admissions process. Interview candidates will be invited by email with further confirmation of the day, time, location, and itinerary. The mailing address, phone number, and email address provided in the OTCAS application should be current to assure communication reaches the applicant.
