Philosophy
Develop Your Critical Thinking Skills
Today’s society is dynamic and complex – and as a philosophy minor, you will be taught to creatively and systematically think about your own experiences and the ideas from great minds of the past to address life’s present challenges.
Why Study Philosophy?
Thomas Jefferson, authors Mary Higgins Clark and David Foster Wallace, comedians Stephen Colbert and Jay Leno, and even martial arts legend Bruce Lee were all philosophy students.
Combined with any USM major, a philosophy minor will prepare students by:
- Instilling a clear and concise writing style suitable for any job or discipline
- Developing disciplined yet creative reasoning skills and innovative ideas
- Helping you understand and evaluate conflicting points of view
Minor Requirements
As a philosophy minor, you will need a minimum of 15 credit hours (usually five courses) in philosophy, including one introductory course, and either Historical Introduction to Philosophy (PH 350) or Human Nature (PH 360) – unless arrangements are made with the program director. You will also be expected to take Philosophical Ethics (PH 340) or an equivalent course.
Recommended Sequence
PH 110/270 – Logic/Introduction to Philosophy
PH 360 – Historical Introduction to Philosophy / Human Nature
PH 340/390 – Philosophical Ethics
