Psychology StudentThrough an integrated curriculum of traditional psychology courses and applied classes and experiences, »¨½·Ö±²¥ psychology students acquire a well-rounded education. The USM classroom approach is collaborative, inquisitive, and facilitative – with student success as its top priority.

Our psychology program is career-focused and balances traditional coursework with opportunities to put theory into practice. Students not only get an education that expands their mind, but it provides them with the skills necessary to succeed professionally.

Juniors and seniors have the option to participate in practicum projects, offering collaborative learning opportunities within professional settings, which are great resume builders.

Job Outlook and Outcomes

Graduates with a major in psychology find various career opportunities, which include administration, management, corrections, law enforcement, pure and applied research, and health care. Entry into such fields is possible at the bachelor's level. A professional career in psychology usually requires graduate work. 

The »¨½·Ö±²¥ psychology program seeks to prepare graduates who demonstrate:

  • fundamental knowledge and comprehension of the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, historical trends, and empirical findings to discuss how psychological principles apply to behavioral problems (PLO1);
  • scientific reasoning and problem solving, including effective research methods (PLO 2);
  • ethically and socially responsible behaviors for professional and personal settings in a landscape that involves increasing diversity (PLO 3);
  • competence in writing and in oral and interpersonal communication skills (PLO 4); and
  • psychology-specific content and skills, effective self-reflection, project management skills, teamwork skills and career preparation (PLO 5).

Psychology Minor Requirements

A minor in Psychology is available to all students, regardless of major, except those majoring in Psychology. Students cannot have a major and a minor in the same subject. Students minoring in psychology must attain a C- or better in all Psychology courses. The requirement for a minor in psychology requires a total of 18 credits.
