USM鈥檚 fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30.

Tax receipts are mailed to the donor鈥檚 preferred address within 15 business days after the donation is received.

Acknowledgment Letters (Receipts)

Anyone who donates a gift of any amount receives an acknowledgment letter (receipt). The letter is generated once the donation is processed and mailed to the donor's mailing address. You will also receive an annual giving tax receipt through the mail by February.

For those who enroll in our recurring gift program, you will receive an email confirmation in place of an acknowledgment letter. You will also receive an end-of-the-year annual giving tax receipt through the mail.

Gifts in-Kind

Gifts in-kind are gifts of tangible property. USM encourages and appreciates gifts-in-kind such as items for our , industry equipment, supplies for labs, library archives, musical instruments, art, and other materials that the university would otherwise need to purchase. Prior to acceptance, gift in-kind are reviewed. USM reserves the right to decline any gift that does not further the university鈥檚 goals or involves special maintenance or other conditions the university not be able to satisfy. Once a gift in-kind is accepted, the university will send an acknowledgment letter.

USM does not provide gift valuations. In accordance with IRS regulations, the donor is responsible for determining the value of an accepted gift. If the estimated value of the gift exceeds $5,000, then a qualified appraisal is required by the IRS to substantiate a donor鈥檚 charitable deduction for gifts-in-kind. University personnel are not qualified appraisers, and federal regulations do not permit the university to give appraisals or estimates of value.
